England Through The Eyes Of A Dreamer!
Published by admin | Filed under Travel
England is
regarded as one of the most mystical and unique places in the world. This is,
in part, because of its rich history, and the tales of medieval knights and
royalty so prevalent in the movies and fairy tales. But even if you discount Hollywood, England
has a flavor all its own.
England is regarded as one of the most mystical and unique places in the world.
This is, in part, because of its rich history, and the tales of medieval
knights and royalty so prevalent in the movies and fairy tales. But even if you
discount Hollywood, England has a flavor all its
own. Its history stretches back over
6000 years and being an island at the very edge of Europe
encouraged the English to become self-sufficient and rely on nobody but
themselves.
England is a very modern country, but ? conversely ? it’s also a very
traditional one and proud of its history and customs. These traditions and customs make England such a
fun place to visit ? as long as you’re prepared to join in.
Where else in the world can you cheer a pig
race or a shin-kicking contest? But you
can at the Cotswold Olympic Games, which have been held every year since the 17th
century. Or you could try your hand at
cheese rolling. Just hurl yourself down
the almost vertical Coopers Hill in pursuit of a giant Double Gloucester
cheese.
Whatever you do in England, don’t forget to try some
proper English tea. This is not a
beverage as such: it’s a proper meal!
You start with dainty sandwiches (strictly crusts off!), follow with
home-made cakes and pastries and finish with petit fours. All washed down with copious amounts of
strong, milky Indian tea.
Visit a traditional pub while you’re here,
too. They’ve featured large in village
life over the centuries and can be found in many a great novel or short story,
too. No story of England would
be complete without some mishap or great adventure occurring in one of the many
pubs scattered through the country. You can definitely not experience England without
having a pint!
And if you’d like to see how people in the England
of the past lived their lives, then you’ll have plenty of opportunity. Many grand houses are open to visitors. They display architecture, furniture, décor
and decoration dating back hundreds of years.
If you love sport, you’ll never be bored in England. Football (soccer to any American visitors),
rugby, tennis, golf and cricket are all extremely popular. Football dates back to the 13th
and 14th century in England and King Henry VIII (better known as the
king with the six wives) used to love playing tennis at his palace in Hampton
Court before he grew too fat to move.
Football seems to be England’s national sport at the
moment. Homes and pubs are usually
buzzing with talk of the next game to come or the highlights of the one just
past. You can also be sure to see the pubs full of many football fans on game
day shouting and rooting for their favorite team.
English traditions make it a wonderful ,
interesting place to visit. It is these very same traditions that make it stand
out among the other places around the world.

interesting facts like staying in a lighthouse, driving a steam train
and playing golf late at night.
