Bay Of Naples - Not All Hot Air (part 1)
Published by admin | Filed under Travel and Leisure
What a wonderful location for a vacation or a holiday home. Apart from the beautiful weather, fabulous italian food and the wonderful hospitality - there is much to admire in this area of Campania. From the glorious views of the Bay of Naples, to Sorrento, Pompei, Mt Vesuvius, Positano, Amalfi and Capri.
So to much enjoy. Sorrento is a splendid base for your exploration. There are many excellent hotels. During the evening the main town centre is closed to traffic - there an excellent range of shops, restaurants and bars. Do take a walk along the top of the cliffs overlooking the bay - there is a magnificent panorama at many stops. Many bars and restaurants have fabulous locations over the bay - our favourite was the Foreigner’s Club (not the best service but the view night and day is awesome). Try and buy a bottle of Limonello - there is a short bus excursion to the hills above Sorrento where this is made.
No trip to this area should miss Pompei. The site is truly magnificent, and the old roman buildings, ampitheatre and smaller theatre are unmissable. There are a number of planned routes - even the two hour trip took the best part of 5 hours. Top tip: avoid the many guides and go at your own pace with the audio guide service, available in different languages (Italian, English, French, German and Spanish ).
If you go to Pompei - then Mount Vesuvius is a complementary trip! Be prepared for a long walk to the top from the main carpark. Takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on your speed (take plenty of water). The crater and lava flows are worth the effort. You will be amazed by the old level inside the crater and where it has dropped to in the last volcanic event.
Top Tips
- Make sure your hotel has air conditioning
- Use Public transport - trains and buses are cheap and frequent
- Avoid driving - Italian drivers are totally mad. You will not survive.
- Go direct to bus station, train stations or ferry ports to get the best transport prices
- Italy property - Apartments are reasonably priced but for a quieter life try the smaller villages in the hills (the views are spectacular).
