Camping - Family Camping Memories

Having had many camping experiences, there is one thing I know, camping is good for families. Family camping can result in many good memories to last lifetimes.

My first experience with camping came when my dad decided we would pull a camper my grandfather, who was definitely ahead of his time, built. It was a camping trip to the Great Smoky Mountains. The five of us, dad, mom and my two brothers, and of course myself, went to Cherokee, North Carolina for a great vacation.

Family Camping Trip To Remember

Dad’s business kept him busy most of the time, so this was a real opportunity to do things together as a family. After all the years that have passed, I still remember things that happened on that family camping trip so very long ago.

Nobody seemed to mind that we were living on top of one another for that week. The weather was good and we were outside playing games by the campfire and the creek, enjoying the company. We got really good at cards on that trip. Because I was a young teenager at this time you might think it strange that I didn’t even mind doing things with my little brothers.

Having always hated to get up in the morning, it was truly unusual for me to jump up early in the morning, ready to go on whatever adventure Dad had planned for the day. We hiked back to waterfalls, creeks and old homesteads during the days and in the evenings we would cook hot dogs and hamburgers over the fire. After dinner, of course, came the marshmallow roast. It’s amazing what you can do without the television, or in today’s world, the computer.

With all the things to see and do, be sure not to forget your camera, lots of digital memory and a camcorder so you can record your family vacation to enjoy over and over through the years. Of course, our first family camping trip was recorded with a film camera and super 8 movie camera. This was back in the old days.

In short, family camping trips can be enjoyable for all in the family, fun and free of stress. There are few types of vacations that offer the experiences that build families like camping.

So start going on family camping trips, load up your backpacks and go on a hike with your family. Find a place to go horseback riding, or swimming in the creek. Check out the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it’s a wonderful place to go camping. It was so great that many, many years after that first camping trip, I moved to Tennessee, right outside the Park. But as much as I love this area, I can never quite get that feeling that camping gives you.
