Jasper National Park birding is not one of the activities that many people usually associate with this park. Many different people would say glaciers, wilderness, elk and lots of snow. While these are true associations, birds are another Jasper gem,too. In fact, the Jasper area has become a popular area not just for skiing and hiking, but also for birding.
You will find many great locations for viewing different kinds of beautiful birds in the park.
Often referred to as the best Jasper National Park birding area, the Patricia Lake & Pyramid Lake area is about ten minutes outside of the town of Jasper. Look for Barred Owl, Pied-billed Grebe and Barrows Golden Eye. The Lakes Annette, Edith and Beauvert also provide a good assortment of birds to watch. The Old Fort Point has great views and is the starting point for an extensive trail network. As well, you will want to visit The Whistlers, home of the camouflaged ptarmigan. Visiting a variety of habitats will present you the best results for seeing different bird species, including along the Athabasca River.

There are many different habitats in Jasper. These habitats include the beautiful natural habitats of the forests, the alpine, the lakes and rivers and the valleys. Because of the great assortment of habitats in Jasper, there are many unique opportunities for birding. Birding in Jasper is very good during certain periods of the year. These periods include peak migration times and the breeding season. Over 250 species of birds have been identified including Bald Eagle, Gray Jay, Black-billed Magpie, Raven, Pileated Woodpecker, Black-capped chickadee, Bohemian Waxwing, Gray-Crowned Rosy Finch and Red-Winged Crossbills.

Established in 1907, Jasper National Park offers visitors from around the modern world the affective experience of seeing miles of unspoiled wilderness making it a natural location for birding. The months of July and August are the most popular for average visitors to come to this surrounding area. Jasper is also the largest and most northerly national park in the Canadian Rockies and part of an amazing World Heritage Site. Jasper’s scenery is amazing and includes delicate and protected habitats.
